Granddaddy Purple seeds are beginner-friendly weed seeds that produce indica-dominant plants famous for heavy yields, vivid purple hues, and rich berry-grape flavors, with 20–30% THC delivering deeply calming effects. Bred from Purple Urkle and Big Bud, GDP is a multi-award winner that delivers visually striking, resin-rich buds after 8–10 weeks of flowering.

Yes, these Granddaddy Purple seeds are feminized cannabis seeds bred to produce female, flower-bearing crops 99% of the time. That means plant sexing takes very little effort with virtually no males to worry about pollinating your females and ruining your harvest with seeded buds.

As photoperiods, these Granddaddy Purp seeds only flower with a light-cycle change, so the plants stay in veg until you flip the lights to 12/12 indoors or when the evenings get longer outdoors. If you want to skip the light cycle complexities in favor of smaller, faster-growing female plants that flower by age instead, Granddaddy Purple Autoflower Seeds are a better fit.

Granddaddy Purple feminized seeds are a strong fit for:

• Beginners who want a sturdy, manageable, medium-sized plant.
• Purple strain lovers chasing deep violet colors and top-shelf bag appeal.
• Indoor growers who prefer full control over veg time and the flowering trigger.
• Outdoor cultivators in warm, dry climates with room for GDP’s bushy growth.
• Yield-focused growers who want maximum harvest weight and potency.

Granddaddy Purple is an indica-dominant cross with Purple Urkle and Big Bud genetics, first introduced in California in 2003 by Ken Estes. Each parent contributes something unique: Purple Urkle, a Mendocino Purps pheno, brings vivid purples and berry-sweet flavors while Big Bud adds high potency and heavy yields tracing back to its Afghani and Skunk heritage.

Other breeders publish their own lineage for GDP, and those genetics differ from one line to the next. These Granddaddy Purple strain seeds share the same celebrated genetic profile that took home the 2015 High Times Cannabis Cup and various other awards.

Granddaddy Purple genetics deliver a sweet and fruity profile of dark ripe berries, sun-kissed grapes, and gentle herbal undertones with a slight earthiness thanks to the dominant terpenes: caryophyllene, myrcene, and pinene. With 20–30% THC, GDP’s indica-leaning effects start with a dreamy cerebral lift before melting into full-on relaxation.

That bliss slides heavily into the limbs, often leading straight to couch lock. It’s a deeply calming experience suited to laid-back evenings and unwinding after a long day. Like all potent indica strains, GDP can come with common side effects like dry mouth and dry eyes, especially at higher doses. For low-tolerance consumers, it’s best to start low and go slow.

Yes, Granddaddy Purple seeds are beginner-friendly and easy to grow because the plants are sturdy, medium-sized, and forgiving of small mistakes. Beginners also benefit from the feminized format, since there’s very little plant sexing to do. The main thing to watch is humidity, since the dense colas can trap moisture and invite mold late in flowering.

Plan for light staking or a trellis in the final weeks too — just in case those chunky flowers start to lean over. With consistent airflow and a watchful eye on humidity, most growers can take this cultivar from seed to harvest without any advanced techniques.

Indoors, Granddaddy Purp fem seeds grow best in a controlled setup with strong lighting, good airflow, and humidity and temperatures dialed in. Feeding follows the same careful approach. Start at a lighter strength in veg and raise it gradually, changing to a bloom-specific feed in flower, when the heavy colas start bulking up.

GDP’s stout, bushy indica structure and medium height fit a standard tent without much fuss, and the plants respond well to training. These methods spread the canopy and get more light to the lower bud sites:

• Topping: cutting the main stem to encourage multiple even colas.
• Low-stress training (LST): bending and tying branches to open the canopy.
• Screen-of-green (SCROG): guiding growth through a net for a flat, uniform canopy.

Steady daytime temperatures help the buds stack weight, while slightly cooler nights help coax out or deepen GDP’s signature purple hues. Color still varies from plant to plant, though. In the final weeks of bloom, keep the air moving through the canopy and bring humidity down as harvest approaches to avoid mold.

Granddaddy Purple grows best outdoors in a warm, dry, Mediterranean-style climate, because its dense buds carry a real mold risk in damp or rainy conditions. Growers in wetter regions can still succeed by spacing plants well, keeping air moving through the canopy, and timing the harvest before late-season rains arrive.

With full sun and plenty of root space, outdoor plants can grow taller and produce heavier yields than indoor plants. The cooler autumn nights near harvest also help bring out GDP’s purple hues without any extra steps.

Granddaddy Purple plants have a flowering time of 8–10 weeks with outdoor crops usually ready to harvest in early to mid-October. Several factors move the harvest window timeline, including phenotype, veg length, environment, and how long you wait for peak ripeness. Common signs that Granddaddy Purple buds have reached maturity include:

• Trichome color: The tiny resin glands turn from clear to mostly cloudy with some amber.
• Pistil color: Most white hairs darken and curl inward.
• Bud density: Colas firm up and stop swelling.

These are general guidelines, not fixed dates since exact timing shifts with each grow.

Granddaddy Purple is classified as a heavy yielder indoors and outdoors, and the final harvest weight depends on phenotype, light, pot size, training, climate, and grower experience.

Reported harvests can still vary widely between setups. Indoor growers can raise yields with training methods that flatten the canopy, while outdoor plants gain weight from full sun and more space for larger root zones.

Compare Granddaddy Purple seeds with similar marijuana seeds if you want a slightly different flavor direction, growth timeline, or strain profile. Every option below falls into the same very high THC (20–30%) range. Purple Punch and Fruity Pebbles OG both descend from Granddaddy Purple, while Critical Purple Auto shares GDP’s Big Bud ancestry.

Yes, GDP, Grand Daddy Purple, Granddaddy Purps, and Grand Daddy Purp are all names for the same Granddaddy Purple strain with indica-leaning Purple Urkle and Big Bud genetics.

The best Granddaddy Purple seeds are sold by reputable seed banks with a documented track record of performance, real customer reviews, and a standard germination guarantee — like the feminized and autoflowering GDP seeds you’ll find at Seed Supreme.

Yes, plants grown from these feminized GDP seeds can be cloned. Clones still respond to how they’re grown, so identical genetics don’t guarantee an identical harvest. Like all autos, autoflowering GDP seeds are a poor fit for cloning, because cuttings keep the parent plant’s age and flower too soon to reach full size.
