Overview

Durban Poison autoflower buds give you the boost you need to jumpstart your day. This sativa-heavy cannabis cultivar originated in South Africa but has recently gained popularity in North America.

Anyone can cultivate this non-photoperiod strain, as it’s robust and reliable. Years of breeding have helped shorten the flowering period of this potent sativa cultivar. Roll up a fatty and learn more about Durban Poison auto below.

Bud origin

According to the 1987 Super Sativa Seed Club brochure, Durban Poison originates from the region near Pinetown, South Africa. The area is around 10 miles inland and approximately 1,000 feet higher than the sea level.

Growers named this strain after its native homeplace, the city of Durban. Autoflower Durban Poison was created by crossing a house ruderalis with a South African landrace from KwaZulu-Natal. It’s said to have arrived in America in the 1990s.

Landrace cannabis strains are original, uncrossed cannabis cultivars that have been cultivated in their native setting. They evolve over a long period and become acclimated to the local environment.

Durban Poison’s ratio of calyxes to foliage is high, and the tiny sugar leaves are covered in resin. The buds have glistening trichomes, boasting a distinctive dank aroma. Enthusiasts appreciate the enormous resin glands, which make it a candidate for concentrate extraction.

Sam the Skunkman, a legendary American breeder, first acquired the original Durban Poison strain and made it famous. Ed Rosenthal and Mel Frank also contributed to ensuring the wider cannabis community got to know it.

Since then, Durban Poison has aided the development of numerous world-renowned strains. Combining pure sativa with ruderalis genes enables these cannabis seeds to develop quickly and easily.

Strains from seeds of landraces are often dubbed by the title of the place they came from, hence the name Durban Poison.

Growing Durban Poison autoflower seeds

The main characteristic of autoflowering plants occurs during flowering. Autos are non-photoperiod, while its counterparts are photoperiod.

Autoflowers have genetic programming that transcends them into flowering without a light cycle trigger. These plants typically follow a 18/6 light schedule, meaning 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness. During flowering, it’s best to give them as much light as possible.

Durban Poison is an excellent option if you're looking for a well-known old-school strain that grows well indoors and outdoors. The plant reaches medium heights. Ensure you have sufficient space if cultivating it outdoors since it can quickly take over a garden plot.

Initially, the leaves may resemble those of an indica strain, but they change shape during  the blooming period. The plant’s growth produces slender and light green sativa-style leaves.

These autoflower plants are best for experienced growers as they don’t have enough time to recover from errors. Provide them with a stress-free environment at all times to prevent loss of harvest.

What climate do these seeds prefer?

Durban Poison autoflower seeds thrive in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere and are accustomed to various climates. This sativa-heavy strain does best outside where it can grow tall. The optimal temperature range for growth is between 65–85°F.

The plants adore the bright and warm South African sun and flourish in similar climates. They enjoy high humidity and aren’t prone to mold. Durban Poison doesn’t handle cold temperatures well, so it’s best to grow indoors if you don’t meet the climate requirements.

Feeding Durban Poison autoflower

Durban Poison relies heavily on nitrogen during its vegetative stage. It plays a crucial role in chlorophyll formation, allowing the plant to convert sunlight into energy. Ensure your fertilizer has traces of other nutrients such as zinc, copper, magnesium and boron.

Outdoor growers add powdered nutrients to the soil when transplanting the plant. This feeds the plant with most of the nutrients it needs throughout its life cycle. You may also top-dress your plant to boost nitrogen content as the plant grows.

Indoor growers use soluble fertilizers while watering. If you have proper drainage, water your Durban Poison plants every three to five days.

Be careful not to overfeed your plants, as this may lead to nutrient burn. You need to have a good understanding of how to sprout auto seeds since the plants have little opportunity to recover from errors.

Flowering & yields

Growing Durban Poison autoflower allows you to harvest crops in 10–11 weeks after germination. The strain typically flowers for around eight weeks.

Durban Poison auto is renowned for its above-average harvests. Each plant can yield up to 23 oz./m2 when grown indoors. Outdoors, harvests range between 4–5 oz./plant. Yield output relies on how you grow the plant and how much space it has to expand.
